What should my major be? helping third world countries?

I just came back from Africa on a mission trip, and realized i can not live knowing that more than half the world is under extreme poverty. What majors and universities are good for something that will actually significantly benefit and change this issue?

international business, international affairs? what can i do with those but are there any other majors?

I used to be at a similar crossroads that you're facing right now back when I was 17-18-ish (I'm 26 now, doing my Masters in Business).

Assuming you're 20, you'll be working for the next 45 years of your life (until you retire at age 65). So what are you going to do for the next 45 years of your life to earn money that will fulfill the lifestyle that you want to lead? Helping impoverished nations are all well and good, and your desire to help is admirable, but you could serve them best but helping yourself first. Get yourself a good education in a lucrative field and then you can donate money so people like you can go to get things done. If you become CEO of a corporation, you can make these policies part of your company's vision, thats something thats more beneficial than just working in Africa.

Just because you feel like helping the world right now, it doesn't mean that you'll feel this way forever / will be able to help (as you can tell, finding majors that help the developing world are hard to come by).

Find out what you want to be in first, whether it be politics, business, finance, whatever; become successful and then help them.

The link is peace corps in general and is for overseas job opportunities with them

Read it and it will give you an idea of the kind of help they need and it will give you the idea of which classes to take in college....they need Doctors, Nurses, agricultural specialists ECT ...learning the language of the area you want to specialize in is a good start...you don't have to learn it perfectly because you'll learn the rest on the job ....and many people will be so eager to help you speak it better when you get where your going.....

I am so glad you look at your visit in this way ...it seems to have been a good thing and helped open your eyes to the real world around you.....I think more kids need to be awakened to the needs of others beyond the texting,I pods and video games......

The only step you have to take next is to contact them and say hello......can you talk to me about the Peace Corps ?
I'm going to disagree with Lincoln on this. If helping people is your passion, then follow it. Follow it with reckless abandon. Don't wait 45 years to find your life's true purpose and meaning. Find it now and follow it. Sounds like you have found it. You may not have a 2 car garage or a pretty house, but you'll be happy knowing that you've pursued the right course and fulfilled your purpose here on this earth.
