Why are the USA the only country in the world who insist on calling what is officially 'Football', Soccer?

Football has been around for a lot longer than the USA. It is an absolutely massive game all of the world, it is a game which gets people, businesses and governments over excited. One that sees companies rebrand their goods with the national flag, heads-of-state wishing the national team good luck, and businesses, streets, roads and phone lines coming to an absolute dead silence as the national team plays.

It is a game that has mean so much to the whole world, long before the USA was even created. The world is more passionate about football than any other sport. So why, despite all this, do the USA, and only the USA, give a different name to the world's biggest game, and use the name 'football' for their own homemade (and internationally unpopular) sport.

Is it just pure arrogance? Did they think they'd change the world's sport like they thought they could change the English language? Surely they're not that stupid...

So what is it? Why did the USA do that? Because, in popular opinion, it just makes them look like arrogant %26quot;my way or no way%26quot; idiots to the rest of the world.

Infact the American are arrogant, rigid and somehow unnecessarily proud. They always tried to be different to the rest of the world. Even from the fore fathers English men.

So they used different words like Phone = American Fone , Tyre = American used Tire

yep
What you're asking is known as a 'rhetorical question'. Yes, by using a question mark, you are 'asking' a question, but it doesn't matter what anybody says, your mind is already made up. You don't care about what the real answer is. You don't care what anyone else thinks or feels about the subject. All you really did here was rant and rave and attempt to bash on the US. Go post a blog somewhere if you want to whine about something. This is Yahoo ANSWERS, not Yahoo blog.
The Americans who play the game... call it football

But the American people i.e the public and fans ... Call it Soccer as it would get confused with what we call .. American football ... which in fairness is just a girl's version of Rugby :)
That's not true. The British also calls it soccer.
Actually fellas, %26quot;soccer%26quot; is a nickname for %26quot;football%26quot;, and is used in countries where another form of %26quot;football%26quot; is played. In America, we have %26quot;grid-iron%26quot; football, in Australia they have %26quot;Aussie No-Rules Football%26quot;, and in many other parts of the world Rugby is referred to as football. The term %26quot;soccer%26quot; just helps people differentiate the different sports and terminology. So, it's not JUST the United States.
