This footage, on puppy mills, will be very difficult to watch. It is horrible what these puppy mills do just to make money. These people thrive on people who don't ask questions and who see a cute, innocent puppy and can't say, no. Ignorance is bliss, and what you don't know won't hurt you, but it is still hurting them. You can only change what you acknowledge, and it's time to get informed! We all make mistakes, thinking we are doing the right thing. Unfortunately, we try to do the best with what we have, but the truth is we have no idea. I too, have unknowingly purchased a puppy mill puppy and it wasn't from a Pet Store. Although, I love her and she has been a wonderful part of our family, she suffered in those first weeks of life, not getting a proper start. Her mother probably continued to suffer many more horrible years there, until she was no longer of any use. If that isn't bad enough to think about, I unknowingly helped support that inhumane business. This is not about placing blame on people or making people feel guilty about their purchase. It is however a wake up call. You now have information which equals power.

The people running these puppy mills have gotten a lot smarter over the years. They know that sales at Pet Stores have gone down since people have become informed about the horrible puppy mill conditions. There are now Puppy Brokers or Kennels, who claim or insinuate that they are the %26quot;breeder%26quot;. They too receive these puppies around 5-6 weeks old and sell them on behalf of the puppy mills. In some cases, they disguise their breeder name as an actual name of a person, when they are actually a business. Please start asking more questions of the people you are purchasing your dog from. Here are are some tips to help you make an educated, no puppy mill purchase. Remember it's not just about saving one cute, innocent puppy it's about helping the many more to come too!

If you go to purchase a puppy and you see any of the following - Please, walk away! Go to a shelter, breed rescue or a reputable breeder.

PUPPY BROKERS =

Sometimes call themselves %26quot;breeders%26quot; or a kennel

Do not have the at least one of the puppy's parents on the premise

Do not screen you with lots of questions

Do not take puppy back (for any reasonable reason) after a few weeks

Do not have quality health records for puppy and parents etc... (especially breed specific ailments health screenings)

Do not let you meet either parent (dog not here today, at the groomer, vets, etc.) or any information on both parents location

Do not let you see where puppies are kept (put you in a %26quot;special%26quot; room or location)

Have multiple breeds of puppies (more then 2)

Insist you see another puppy (even a different breed) if your not interested

Does not socialize puppies

Don't have clean, healthy looking puppies (puppies smell badly)

Shows you the Mom (who clearly has not recently given birth)

Has a puppy who is very fearful (puppy has had traumatic experience)

Do not show any concern about the puppy's welfare

Good, Reputable Breeders =

Always stand behind their puppies

Try to better the breed

Have references

Will answer any of your questions

Let you meet at least the Mom, and give you location information on the dad, if not there

Breed only one or two different breeds

Have clean areas for the puppies

Let you see where puppies are kept (have nothing to hide)

Have all heath information %26amp; screenings (breed specific health concerns) for a few generations before

Will screen you

Socialize their puppies

Do not breed dogs with aggression or faulty temperament

Have homes for most, if not all the puppies before they are born (why bring puppies into the world with no demand for them?)

Do not breed dog every heat season

Please pass this information on to every dog owner you know. Let's STOP THIS!!

I wanted to help, but my lunch break is only an hour, and I don't have time to read all of this. Seriously, I'll look up this stuff, but next time be more concise.

My family also purchased a puppy from a puppy mill (unknowingly). She was taken away from her mother too early and has side effects of the treatment even today and she is now 5. I would really like to help out with stopping this horrible cycle. Can you post more information on what we could do?
Hi. Contact the office of the Governor of Pennsylvania. He's involved in an active campaign to shut down the state's puppy mills. Get some advice on how to encourage your own state's gov or reps to help you do it. This needs to end NOW!!!
